Speed Limiters on Trucks Get Support in Quebec
105 km Mandate
Recommended by Quebec National Assembly Commission
(OTTAWA: June 14, 2006) –
The proposal to activate speed limiters on trucks is getting political support
in Quebec.
An all-party committee of the
Quebec National Assembly is recommending that it be mandatory that speed
limiters be activated on all trucks and buses and that the maximum speed be set
at 105 km/hr. The Commission des transports et de l”environnement
submitted its report to the National Assembly June 8.
All members of the commission
– which was mandated by the National Assembly to examine specific road
safety issues -- are MNAs. The same commission made several other
recommendations -- on the use of cell phones, electronic speed detection on
roads where police presence is difficult, and winter tires. It is expected that
the report will be debated in the fall. The Quebec Trucking Association actively
participated in the deputations to the commission.
The developments in Quebec
follow closely on the heels of the passage at second reading of a private
member’s bill in the Ontario legislature that would make activation of
speed limiters on trucks with a maximum speed setting of no more than 105 km/hr
mandatory for all trucks that operate into, out of and within that
province.
