CTA Requests Carrier Feedback on Obstructive Sleep
Apnea
In 2009, CTA formed a working group with the Canadian Council of
Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) to examine the potential impact
to the Canadian trucking industry of the development in the US of
mandatory sleep apnea screening, testing and treatment of commercial
drivers. An essential part of the process in developing a work
plan to address this possible mandate is gauging the awareness and scope
of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) among CTA carrier members.
OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea, and has been found to
contribute to driver fatigue, driver sleepiness and accidents.
Accurate carrier feedback on OSA is essential to developing an effective
strategy to address possible US regulations.
CTA encourages its carrier members to provide their feedback
regarding this issue by completing the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Survey by
March 26th. Details of the survey can be obtained by CTA members through
their Provincial Trucking Associations.
